We woke up at Shaw and Sarah’s house, took a nice ride down to Boone Bike and Touring with Shaw to meet Bill’s friend Robert, who live in the area. After getting out bikes ready we headed out of Boone for the Parkway. Our plan was to ride to Jeep’s house near Table Rock. Jeep is an old friend from Outward Bound that Bill and I have had many a great adventure with.
Along the way we dropped down into Blowing Rock for some great pizza at the Mellow Mushroom. The ride back out was more than slow with a few pounds of pizza in our guts be we were able to keep moving.
We arrived at Jeep’s in the late afternoon after saying our goodbyes to Robert and hung out for a mellow evening. It was great to catch up and even watch a stage of the Vuelta de España on the TV.

Day 5 or the 28th of August started in Roanoke with plans of making it to Rocky Knob, and we almost made it. The thing is that the climb turned out to be as hard as the day before, which we did not expect, and Tuggle Gap appeared as a beautiful oasis and perfect stopping point. We were both willing to keep on riding and it was only a few miles more but we would have had to camp and we did not have much food. Tuggle Gap on the other hand had a restaurant, hotel and just looked like the right place to stop. If ever do this ride again, I will make sure that I stop here again.

The Basque country is incredibly beautiful and a great place to do some bike touring. My friend Bill emailed me about a month ago and asked if I would meet him in Bilbao for some riding around. Of course I couldn’t pass up the oportunity so we planned a little ride from Bilbao to San Sebastian along the coast. Because we were intent on riding as much trail as possible and riding without a real plan we turned a 100 kilometer ride into a 260 plus kilometer ride. We also were trying to do the trip on the cheap so we ended up spending most of our nights sleeping in fields on the side of the road, one of which was very popular with the local wild pigs. The adventure went off without a hitch and only one flat tire.
There over 50 species of humming birds in Costa Rica. I was not really planning on taking a lot of pictures of birds on this trip but it was hard to resist.
If every other day of the year is as good as this one then this is going to be a really good year. 5:30am is not too early to start a new year, especially if you are going on an adventure.
